WASHINGTON – Annual homicide numbers from the D.C. metro area bring both encouraging and discouraging signs.
According to the Metropolitan Police Department, there were 103 killings in the District in 2013. That is a jump when compared to 2012, which saw a half-century low of 88.
Without the Washington Navy Yard shootings, which left 12 victims dead, D.C.’s total would have shown a slight uptick at 91.
Regardless, the numbers are down considerably from the 248 a decade ago and the 454 in 1993.
In Prince George’s County, Md., officials are pleased by a drop in crime, according to @WTOP on Twitter.
